I have been doing the newsletter for about 16 years. The job of doing the newsletter was not originally done by the secretary. When I assumed the duties of secretary I some how got the job of doing the newsletter. I think it's time for some one else to do the newsletter. We could use new fresh ideas. If there is any one interested please contact me. I'd be happy to work with and help any one that would like this job. John Miller Jr. Anyone that has articles they would like in the newsletter please send them to me And I will put them in. COLORADO SPRINGS REUNION Tuesday, September 7th – The Registration Desk opened in the Hospitality Room, the Royal Gorge room at the DoubleTree Hotel. The Welcome Reception was held in the Windows Room with great food and drinks. Wednesday, September 8th – Tour #1 was a drive through the Garden of the Gods Park and a visit, with lunch, to the U.S. Air Force Academy. The Garden of the Gods has spectacular rock formations and on this particular day there were climbers ascending some of the formations. The Air Force Academy was superb with an excellent lunch and a short speech by a senior cadet who gave us an idea of the rigorous schedule of the cadets. After lunch we had the opportunity to go to the gift shop and to the spectacular cathedral. Thursday, September 9th – Two tours and dinner with a western show gave us the opportunity for a variety of things. Tour#2 was a cog railway ride to the top of Pikes Peak. The scenery was outstanding and again the weather was excellent, just right for a trip up a mountain. The altitude was noticeable to us flat landers and most of us experienced the ‘rocky mountain high’ – some more than others. Tour#3 – was to a pottery factory and shopping in Old Colorado City. The ladies that took this tour enjoyed themselves. Tour#4 – was an outdoor chuck wagon dinner and show at the Flying W Ranch. The food was good and the show was good old western music and humor at its best. A good time was had by all. Friday, September 10th – the final day of tours provided two choices. Tour#5 was a trip to Cripple Creek to the casino and to shop at the small stores. I heard no reports of big winners. Tour#6 was to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. Again scenery was the highlight with the bridge being one of a kind over a very deep gorge. Saturday Business Meeting – September 11, 2004 The meeting was called to order by Bill Royer at 8:00 a.m. and Bill led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Then followed a moment of silence to remember the victims of September 11, 2001 which was followed by an opening prayer. Bill welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked Lloyd Friedli for hosting the reunion. This was followed by the Bell Ringing ceremony and the list of the deceased members was read. Secretary’s Report – John Miller was unable to attend the reunion and the minutes of the October 11, 2003 meeting were read by Lloyd Friedli. Bill Royer asked the members to approve the minutes of the 2003 meeting. It was moved and seconded that the minutes be approved as read. Motion carried. New Members – Bill asked those in attendance who were attending their first reunion to give their name, division and years on board. Those responding were Jim Barnes, Bill Donley, Don Kremer and John Andrew. They were welcomed by a rousing round of applause. Board of Directors Meeting – Bill reported on the Board of Directors Meeting held Wednesday, September 8, 2004; a recommendation to reduce the annual cost for lifetime membership to $9 from $10 was rejected; a proposal to provide a Scholarship award to a high school senior was accepted and recommended for adoption at this meeting; a lottery type drawing was presented as a way to generate income for the Association and will receive further review and d iscussion before adoption or rejection; the 2005 reunion in Baltimore was discussed.Treasurers Report – Lloyd Friedli gave the report. He plans to go to the ship in January 2005 to try to move the project forward and to work on a shipmate database project with the Museum. It was moved and seconded to adopt the Scholarship Award program. Motion Carried. There is a parade and it is quite an impressive ceremony and quite a day. Election of Officers – Dick Battershell our current Vice President has resigned therefore a new VP is needed. Al Rogers nominated Scott Redding for this position. John Miller has done an outstanding job producing the ships letter but would now like to be relieved of the responsibility. General discussion was held concerning the production of the paper. Baltimore (2005) Reunion – John Plude reported and introduced Ken Williard who is co-host (along with John) of the 2005 reunion. The reunion hotel will be the Tremont Plaza Hotel. It is downtown and near the harbor. In the harbor is the USS Constitution, a submarine is there, and other ships. He discussed a site visit made by the Plude’s, Royer’s, and Ken in August 2004. The dates of the reunion are Tuesday, September 20 to Sunday the 25th. Room rates will be $119 per night plus tax and all rooms are suites. Tours may be to Washington D.C. and to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. 2006 Reunion – Bill opened the floor to discussion for a site for the 2006 reunion. Seattle was mentioned – the reunion has been there but we could go again. Comment was made that the west coast should be the location based on the rotation of east, center and west. Lloyd Friedli reported the Los Angeles Convention Bureau provided information and two hotels were highlighted. Other possibilities for which Lloyd received information were Tucson, Albuquerque, St. Louis and Baton Rouge. Both Tucson and Albuquerque Convention Bureaus have done a good job of providing information on their cities and hotels available. After discussion a vote was taken and Albuquerque was chosen as the site for the 2006 reunion. Bill and Lloyd will begin planning for the reunion. Membership Cards – Lloyd reported that it would be a cost and time saving if we issued membership cards without the year that members dues were ’paid to’ shown on the card. After discussion it was agreed that membership cards without the year shown should be issued. The year a members dues are ‘paid to’ are shown on the Sunrise Press address label. New cards will be issued over the next 12 months. A more distinctive card will be provided for ‘life’ members. Web Site – A webmaster to take over the Association web site is wanted. The site address is www.usslexingtoncv16.organd it was designed and currently maintained by Lloyd Friedli, but it would be great to have someone take it over. Adjournment - There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 0920 a.m. Saturday Evening Banquet – The Colorado Sea Cadets, Lexington Division posted the colors and after the pledge of allegiance Al Rogers gave his inspiring "Remember Me, I’m Your Flag" recitation. The dinners were delicious and were followed by a series of patriotic songs played by an Air Force 5 piece band the "Rampart Winds". A member of the Sea Cadets gave a short presentation concerning their activities. A raffle of items donated was conducted through out the evening. Thanks to all who donated items! Sunday Morning Service – Chaplain Lowell Moore from Fort Carson conducted the service. He was assisted by Nina Rogers who led the singing. Bon Voyage – God Speed and we will see you all next year! I have to thank Lloyd Friedli for all the help he gave me with this newsletter. I had to miss the reunion because I had a leg operation and could not travel. He sent me all the reunion information. He always spoke with great pride about the brave young pilots and crewmembers aboard the ship...rarely about "himself." Some years after his death in 1989 at the age of 88 I found an old scrapbook containing many articles, memos and orders about his experiences aboard CV 16 and his life in the Navy at the time. It was an emotional experience to say the least... I wish he were still here to see the wonderful tribute that you have created for those that have served with such pride aboard the Lexington. I can assure you that as his son, it is deeply appreciated. I don't know if it is possible to contact any living veterans through your website that may have served with my father. If so, please pass this message along. I would certainly enjoy hearing from them... Again, many thanks for your fine tribute to those that served aboard the Lexington. A grateful son. Indeed, Midway Magic-is real. No other carrier served our country for 47 years spanning victory in WWII, Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, the era of détente and Desert Storm. More than 200,000 Americans shared in the odyssey, Setting new standards of naval air- operations that remain to this day. The Midway is now permanently berthed at Navy Pier, which is within 5 miles of most major downtown hotels and attractions, less than a mile from the convention center and only 1.5 miles from San Diego Lindbergh Field airport. With its majestic presence and historical exhibits, the Midway offers an unparalleled event experience, Joe and Alice Zikewich decided to make a donation of $3,500 to the Pea Coat and Brick Image Memorial Project. Joe says its been far to long to recognize these veterans buried at sea. |
